How about that famous bloodhound nose, it seems that every time you read or hear about bloodhounds it is always about how they used their super nose to accomplish some feat for the good of society. Well that is pretty true, But how? what makes the bloodhounds nose superior to other dogs? According to a PBS article on the bloodhounds sense of smell it has been found that they can distinguish smells at least a thousand times better than a human. "Researchers have estimated that a bloodhound’s nose consists of approximately 230 million olfactory cells, or “scent receptors" (PBS "The Bloodhound’s Amazing Sense of Smell"). With a gift of scent receptors and a desire to work (see josh's page for more info on training).
If you would like to learn more from a real expert please view the video above. Harlan Pepper is clearly a bloodhound expert (not an actor) and he offers some brilliant insight into the nose of a bloodhound. Enjoy! Along with the millions of scent receptors there is a small flap in each nostril of the Bloodhound's nose that flips down during exhaling that diverts the exhaling breath out the side of each nostril. This lessens disturbance of any scent on the ground that will be inhaled by the hound during it's next inhale. One more thing that adds to their otherworldly trailing abilities. |
