Bloodhounds Social Demeanor
Bloodhounds are not dogs for the faint hearted. Although these creatures are kind and loyal, due to their size and hunting nature, they can be an overwhelming presence in the household. According to the author of Bloodhound, Nona K. Bauer (2004) the Bloodhounds temperament is affectionate, friendly, and protective. Despite this friendly nature, this can be offset by their sheer size. When a bloodhound greets a person, they are known to push themselves on their hind legs, leaning both paws on a persons shoulder to say “hello”. As affectionate as this may seem, due to the weight they carry, this amount of pressure can easily push a child or smaller person over and thus come across with a pushy nature. The bloodhound could be described as stubborn, or some may call it determined. This trait is best known for the breed’s ability to track animals and humans. The bloodhound will get very aggressive once they are put on a trail, never giving up until the trail is lost or the object is found. There is a common misconception that bloodhounds are ferocious and bloodthirsty which stemmed from their ability to track human scents. This trait has been magnified in movies, and history dating back to the 1800s where the dogs would track down run away slaves on southern plantations. These misconceptions are not accurate of the friendly giant that the bloodhound is. Bloodhounds are friendly with both humans and other species of canines, thriving in fact. If these dogs are raised with other animals, they are often very friendly and protective of any animals they meet. For more information check out Josh's page |
